Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) checks that electrical appliances with a plug, from kettles and toasters to power tools and office equipment, are safe to keep using. It combines a close visual inspection with a set of electrical tests carried out on a calibrated PAT tester.
- 1Formal visual inspectionThe plug, cable, casing and any strain relief are checked by eye for damage, wear, incorrect fuses or DIY repairs. Most faults are caught here, before a meter is even used.
- 2Earth continuity and insulation resistanceThe PAT tester checks the earth path is sound on earthed appliances, and that no current is leaking through damaged insulation.
- 3Polarity and functional checkConfirms the appliance is wired correctly inside the plug, and switches on and runs as it should.
- 4Pass label and recordA dated label is fixed to the item, and the result is logged on your digital register and certificate.
Why it matters
There isn't a single law that names "PAT testing" directly, but the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained to prevent danger, and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a general duty on employers and landlords to keep people safe. Regular inspection and testing of portable appliances is the standard, recognised way to meet that duty and to show you've done it if something ever goes wrong.
It also catches genuinely dangerous faults, damaged cables, cracked casings, loose connections, before they cause a shock or a fire, most of which aren't visible without opening the plug or testing the earth path.
Who needs it, and how often
There's no single fixed interval that applies to everyone. The right frequency depends on the type of equipment, how hard it's used and the environment it's in, so we set a sensible schedule for your premises rather than applying one rule to everything.
What happens on the day
- Every appliance is checked visually first, plug, cable, casing and strain relief.
- Each item is then tested on a calibrated PAT tester for earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity, with a functional check.
- A dated pass label is fixed to every item that passes.
- Anything that fails is set aside, clearly reported, and we'll give you a fixed price to repair or replace it.
- You get a full digital asset register and certificate covering everything tested.
Common questions
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
No single law requires PAT testing by name, but employers and landlords have a legal duty to keep electrical equipment safe. PAT testing is the standard, recognised way most businesses and landlords meet that duty and demonstrate it to an inspector or insurer.
How often should appliances be PAT tested?
It depends on the equipment and environment. Guidance suggests as often as every 3 to 6 months for site tools, around 12 months for appliances landlords provide to tenants, and every 2 to 4 years for low-risk office equipment that rarely moves. We'll recommend a schedule for your premises.
How much does PAT testing cost?
For a small batch of up to 10 items it's a flat £95, covering the call-out, travel and testing. Medium batches of 11 to 40 items start from £115, and larger batches of 41 or more items are priced from £2.75 per item. See our PAT testing prices above for the full guide price.
Is PAT testing the same as an EICR?
No. An EICR covers your fixed wiring and installation. PAT testing covers portable, plug-in appliances. Many landlords and businesses have both done at the same visit.
What happens if an appliance fails?
We label it as failed, take it out of use, and give you a fixed price to repair or replace it. It's noted on your register so you have a full record.
